Perspective
Today I had a prostitute look down on me when I told her I have maori blood in me.
She looked at me like I was dirty.
Before that, she treated me like a normal person.
Then we started talking about wars and how cultures these days ride on the coattails of their ancestor’s glory. And I mentioned that a lot of maori people do that. Not all of them, but the ones you see on the news tend to.
And I mentioned that I don’t like the way the maori people are generalised because of media. Abuse cases, land disputes etc.
I told her it irritated me because I am of maori descent, and my family are good people, but you never see that good side unless you personally know people like that.
And as soon as she heard that, she looked at me like I was just another land grubbing child abuse case waiting to happen.
Not once did I treat her like she was any different to anyone else once I found out about her profession. I lost even more faith in humanity today.
